Estrada Nacional 2 is one of the most iconic and famous Portuguese roads, which crosses Portugal from north to south, from Chaves to Faro, covering 739,260 kilometres (in its original length). Known for being one of the longest roads in Europe, Nacional 2, and the only one in Europe that crosses a country in its entire length, offers an unforgettable journey through the most beautiful landscapes of Portugal, connecting small villages, historic towns, majestic mountains and verdant plains.
Along the National 2, we can find several tourist attractions, such as the Castle of Vila Real, the thermal city of Caldas de Moledo, the Sanctuary of Nossa Senhora da Conceição in Lamego, the city of Coimbra, among many other points of interest. It is a road rich in history and culture, which allows us to discover authentic and traditional Portugal. The EN2 passes through 11 rivers and 11 mountains.
Along its route it passes through 35 municipalities (Chaves, Vila Pouca de Aguiar, Vila Real, Santa Marta de Penaguião, Peso da Régua, Lamego, Castro Daire, São Pedro do Sul, Viseu, Tondela, Santa Comba Dão, Mortágua, Penacova, Vila Nova de Poiares, Lousã, Góis, Pedrogão Grande, Sertã, Vila de Rei, Sardoal, Abrantes, Ponte de Sor, Avis, Mora, Coruche, Montemor-o-Novo, Viana do Alentejo, Alcácer do Sal, Ferreira do Alentejo, Aljustrel, Castro Verde, Almodôvar, Loulé, São Brás de Alportel and Faro), denominated concelhos de interior.
The mythical Estrada Nacional 2 marked its 78th anniversary on 11 May. Instituted on 11 May 1945 in the Highway Plan by decree-law no. 34593, Estrada Nacional 2 bears the presence of the constructions of the Philippine architecture, referring the beginning of its history to past centuries, where it had been created to centrally serve the Portuguese kingdom, calling it Estrada Real.
